I recently decided to spend some time exploring a neighbor state, Nebraska, my perception of which, had been formed primarily by the Interstate 80 experience.  I spent eight days traveling primarily on eight of the state's designated Scenic Byways.  I was well reward with beautiful scenery, fascinating historic and eye-catching buildings, and with friendly people.
